Three scientists win 2025 Nobel Prize for immune system discovery
Three scientists won the Nobel medicine prize for discovering peripheral immune tolerance, a key pathway that keeps the immune system balanced.
Mary E Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Dr Shimon Sakaguchi won the 2025 Nobel Prize in medicine by uncovering how the immune system knows to attack germs but leaves the body's own cells alone. The work identified a key pathway called peripheral immune tolerance that controls this balance.
Experts say the findings help us understand autoimmune diseases like type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. The prize carries 12 million Swedish kronor, about A$1.7 million.
This week's Nobel announcements also include physics on Tuesday, chemistry on Wednesday, literature on Thursday, peace on Friday, and economics on October 12.
