Canberra MMA fighter opens up on cancer battle after diagnosis mid-season
Canberra MMA fighter Duke Didier was diagnosed with cancer in June after competing at a championship trial.
Duke Didier was competing in the Abu Dhabi Combat Club trials on the Gold Coast in June 2026 when he decided to get a groin ache checked out. Duke Didier thought it was a muscle strain.
Two days later, doctors told him he had cancer. The 37-year-old fighter kept the diagnosis private for four months while undergoing chemotherapy.
He found the mental side harder than the physical: chemotherapy made him feel sick, but the uncertainty and fear of the unknown troubled him more. His hair and beard fell out, and he struggled with his changed appearance.
He visited other cancer patients at Canberra Hospital and realised many were facing far tougher battles. That perspective shifted his mindset.
Now Didier is opening up publicly because he wants to help others going through the same ordeal. He's set his sights on returning to compete and has a check-up coming in January.
