Developer lists Mercure site after winning approval for 220+ apartments
Developer Salter Brothers is selling the Newcastle Mercure hotel site. They had planned to build 220 apartments across two towers.
The Mercure hotel at Steel Street in Newcastle is on the market for the first time. Developer Salter Brothers bought it four years ago and planned to turn it into a major residential complex.
The seven-storey, 131-room hotel sits on more than 4,000 square metres of inner-city land. Salter Brothers won stage 1 planning approval in June this year.
They could keep the existing hotel while building one 114-apartment tower beside a four-storey podium. The podium would have shops, car parking, apartments, services and shared open space.
A second stage would have replaced the hotel with another 114-apartment tower. In total, the plan would have more than 220 apartments and 257 car parks.
The towers would reach 23 and 19 storeys. The company is now selling the site through real estate agent CBRE.
Expressions of interest close November 5. Vacant possession is available from January 1, 2027.
