Shellharbour residents fight 20-storey tower plan with petition
Over 1,000 residents oppose state proposals allowing 20-storey towers and nearly 2,000 new homes.
Shellharbour residents are organising opposition to major rezoning proposals that would reshape the region. A community petition with over 1,000 signatures has been sent to Shellharbour MP Anna Watson's office.
Residents are planning a community meeting on October 28 at The Shellharbour Club. They will discuss next steps, including possible marches.
The NSW state proposals allow apartment buildings up to 20 storeys in the city centre car park near Stockland Shellharbour. Elsewhere in the CBD, there would be 17-storey towers.
Another plan would see nearly 2,000 new homes built around the new Shellharbour Hospital. These sites would allow buildings up to seven storeys.
The state government says the plans include 10 per cent affordable housing on government land. They also include better public transport and cycling links.
The Department of Planning is currently reviewing nearly 500 community submissions received during the public exhibition period.
