Sun bear Jamran, rescued from a pole in Cambodia, dies at Perth Zoo aged 26
Jamran, a sun bear rescued from Cambodia, has died aged 26 after nearly 20 years at Perth Zoo.
Perth Zoo has said goodbye to Jamran, a 26-year-old male sun bear. A fundraising effort by WA residents saved him from Cambodia nearly 20 years ago.
Found tied to a pole outside a Cambodian restaurant, he arrived in Perth in 2007. For the past nearly 20 years, keepers helped him overcome emotional trauma from his early life.
They taught him health training so vets could give him regular check-ups and injections for arthritis. Jamran was clever, charismatic and quirky.
He loved sardines and would spend hours catching flies. As age-related issues worsened, vets decided he could no longer have the quality of life he deserved.
His female companion Bopha remains at the zoo.
