NT builds 1,200-bed private prison to ease jail crowding

The Northern Territory will build a new 1,200-bed men's prison and a 200-bed women's prison. A private company will design, build and run the men's facility at no cost to the Territory. The government will run the women's prison.

Why it mattersThe Territory's prisons are overcrowded and ageing. These new facilities will add beds and allow the government to run more training and education programs for prisoners.
