Newcastle trainer books first Melbourne Cup ticket after wildcard win
Newcastle trainer Jason Deamer secured his first Melbourne Cup runner when his mare won the final wildcard at Randwick.
Newcastle trainer Jason Deamer has booked his first ticket to Melbourne Cup day after his six-year-old mare It's A Knockout won a last-chance wildcard race at Randwick. The mare had arrived with Deamer barely two months ago from Ciaron Maher's stable, seeking a change of scenery.
After finishing fifth and third in two country cups, she lined up for the October 17 wildcard and won. It's A Knockout earned a spot in the $3 million Big Dance, a listed mile race that runs just 40 minutes before the main Cup at Flemington.
Deamer is a third-generation jockey-turned-trainer based near Broadmeadow. His son and mates came down from regional Queensland to watch and celebrated the win from the Everest Day crowd.
For a country trainer, the experience rates right up there for a career, Deamer said.
