A former local councillor has been found dead in floodwater on Queensland's Fraser Coast. James Hansen was a well-known dairy farmer.
Hansen was also a One Nation candidate in 2017. Hansen was discovered at Boompa shortly after 11am on Monday.
Fraser Coast mayor George Seymour remembered him as an advocate for rural communities and primary producers. Heavy rain across the region has caused significant flooding.
Six people were rescued from a campground in Leyburn. The area received about 86 millimetres of rain in 24 hours.
It received 211 millimetres over the previous week. Parts of Queensland have seen two to four times their average October rainfall.
A blocking high-pressure system caused this.
- 86 millimetres
- Rainfall in 24 hours
- 211 millimetres
- Previous week rainfall
- 6 people
- Rescued from Leyburn
Why it mattersExtreme rainfall across Queensland has caused multiple deaths and severe flooding. This happens in communities that typically receive less rain. It adds to their climate risk.
AustraliaQueensland communities, particularly rural areas, face increased flood risk from shifting weather patterns that are delivering double or triple normal rainfall in short periods.
