Kimi Antonelli claims F1 pole at US GP in bid for first world title
Antonelli holds 102-point lead over Russell and needs 125-point gap after Sunday to clinch his first F1 championship.
Kimi Antonelli claimed pole position for the US Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas, putting himself in position to possibly clinch his first F1 world championship this weekend. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver has a 102-point lead over teammate George Russell and needs to extend that to 125 points after Sunday's race.
To take the title here, Antonelli must win and have Russell finish outside the top eight, with Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton outside the top four. Antonelli's pole is his first since the Belgian GP in July.
If he does not clinch this weekend, his championship will likely be secured at the next round in Mexico.
