Why world maps are always wrong
You cannot map a sphere onto a flat surface without distorting either size, shape, or distance.
The Mercator map we grew up with has a fatal flaw: it shows Africa the same size as Greenland, even though Africa is about 14 times larger. Gerardus Mercator designed it in 1569 so straight lines on the map matched compass bearings perfectly, ideal for sailors navigating.
To achieve that, he stretched the grid wider toward the poles, making North America and Europe balloon while countries at the equator shrank. Mercator's distortion creates a real psychological effect: we see bigger as more important, which subtly downplayed Africa's wealth and global significance.
The Equal Earth projection shows true sizes but sacrifices Mercator's straight lines. The alternative map cannot measure distance accurately.
