ChatGPT quotes Australian repairs at US prices

ChatGPT returns American rates instead of Australian pricing standards for plumbing work.

Canberra plumbing group Rydeau Plumbing has warned that homeowners using AI to quote repair costs get wildly inaccurate numbers. ChatGPT returns American or British pricing standards, leaving quotes at only 50-70 per cent of actual Australian costs.

The difference comes down to exchange rates and different safety rules across the three countries. Business manager Lynley Stapleton said clients often question plumbers' expertise because they have been told the job costs far less.

The same problem affects electricians and builders. To get accurate pricing, tradies recommend meeting face-to-face so they can see the actual problem, not relying on AI estimates from prompts.

Why it mattersHomeowners who budget using AI quotes will get shock bills when tradies name the real cost.

AustraliaAustralian homeowners are undercounting repair budgets by 30-50 per cent, leading to project delays when tradespeople quote the actual job.
