A protest march against wars and rising living costs began peacefully on Saturday, but it turned violent in central Milan. Masked protesters threw stones and paving blocks at riot police, set fire to barricades made from bar tables, and stole from stores in Piazza del Duomo and nearby luxury shopping area.
Police used water cannons and tear gas. At least two police officers were injured and about 50 demonstrators, including many minors, were detained.
Images showed a badly damaged police car. Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni criticized the violence, saying protesting is a right but setting fires in cities is not.
