Newcastle playwright stages women's stories without male filters
Playwright Mikaela Corrigan founded Cats in the Cupboard Productions to tell women's stories from women's perspective.
Mikaela Corrigan wrote She, Her & I, a new play about three sisters, grief and family bonds set during a record-breaking hot Newcastle summer. She stars in it.
The production closes this year's UpStage season at the Playhouse. Corrigan founded her independent theatre company in 2023 after interviewing women and noticing they spoke of universal truths as though they were secrets.
Corrigan developed those conversations into Secret Girl Stuff, which premiered at Sydney Fringe and earned a Melbourne Fringe nomination. She teaches drama to young students and credits her high school drama teacher with showing her theatre was a real career path.
Corrigan says female stories deserve to be told by women without being reduced to "niche categories" or filtered through a male lens.

AustraliaNewcastle theatre-goers get to see locally made, female-centred work at the Playhouse, and the company models how independent Australian artists create space for underrepresented voices.
