Regent Theatre awaits final council nod before Wollongong reopens
Historic Regent Theatre awaiting council approval for $4.45 million rooftop bar before opening as music venue in Q1 2027.
Wollongong's art deco Regent Theatre, which opened in 1957, will reopen as a live music venue, bar and cinema next year if final approval comes through. Owner Joe McGuinness is waiting for council approval of a $4.45 million rooftop bar project.
If approved, the site will have a rooftop bar, movie screen, and two areas for concerts. One will hold 1,850 people and an upper mezzanine level will hold even more.
Department referrals on the proposal have all come back positive, McGuinness said. The theatre's long renovation has been tough, but the team is now moving toward planning events and marketing the venue.
