AFL teacher Emma Attard wins Tasmania award for building girls' game
Kings Meadows High School teacher named AFL Tasmania's Teacher of the Year for developing women's football programs.
Emma Attard has spent more than a decade growing football in Tasmania's north, especially among girls who have never played before. The Kings Meadows High School teacher was recently recognised as AFL Tasmania's Teacher of the Year for her work running female gala days, umpire training programs for girls, and inter-school matches.
Emma Attard's magic moment comes when nervous girls step onto the field terrified they cannot kick, then come off asking to do it again. Attard runs the annual gala day at her school and sits on the club committee.
She said the new Devils team gives local girls and boys a pathway to play state football without leaving Tasmania.
