Ethiopian rebels recapture key town as regional war fears grow

Fighting has erupted again in northern Ethiopia after a ceasefire held for four years. Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) rebels captured the strategic town of Erebti over the weekend.
Erebti is in the Afar region. Ethiopia's military chief accused Eritrea of providing money and suggested Sudan and Egypt were involved.
Sudan rejected this. Eritrea counter-accused Ethiopia.
About 150,000 people have been displaced. Hospitals in the region saw wounded patients jump from about 180 to over 420 in just 48 hours.
The TPLF and Ethiopian federal forces fought a brutal war from 2020 to 2022, ending in a peace deal. But tensions have simmered as both sides moved for control.
The renewed fighting raises fears of a wider regional conflict.
