Chronic fatigue, long Covid found to share biological root
Researchers found five diseases, chronic fatigue syndrome, long Covid, PTSD, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis, may disrupt the same biological networks.
A new study found that chronic fatigue syndrome, long Covid, PTSD, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis may share the same biological problem. All five appear to disrupt the same body systems: energy, immunity, stress response and inflammation.
The diseases matter because they start in very different ways. Some begin with a virus, trauma, or autoimmune attack.
Yet patients report very similar symptoms. These include overwhelming fatigue, brain fog, poor sleep and reduced functioning.
Researchers found very little direct overlap in individual genes. When they studied how those genes work together in biological networks, a clear pattern emerged.
Despite different triggers, all five diseases may harm the same biological systems. The study identified key genes involved in immune regulation and energy production as candidates for future treatment research.

Why it mattersThe discovery explains why different diseases produce similar symptoms. It could guide research into treatments that target shared biological systems.
AustraliaLong Covid affects many Australians, and this research suggests treatments might eventually help people with chronic fatigue, PTSD and autoimmune diseases too.
