Gabby Newton finds edge through dietary breakthrough
Fremantle's Gabby Newton learned to fuel her dairy-free, gluten-free body for elite performance with her club dietician's help.
Newton has managed dairy and gluten intolerances plus reactions to onion and garlic throughout her football career. When she joined the Western Bulldogs in 2019, a dietician told her those symptoms weren't normal.
For years she underfueled on game days, anxious about triggering symptoms. Newton and club dietician Carla Florio trialled new food and drink options during pre-season to find what worked.
It was a lengthy process but it meant Newton arrived at the season knowing exactly what to eat and drink before and during matches. She's an All-Australian and is vice-captain at Fremantle this season.
The club's support let her stop seeing dietary needs as a barrier and focus on dominance instead.
