Man sentenced to 5 years for repeated rape of 16-year-old girl
A 51-year-old man was sentenced to five years jail for raping a 16-year-old girl who became pregnant as a result.
The man, now 51, met the girl at a Canberra shopping centre in 2019 when she was wearing her school uniform and aged 16. He was then 44.
After they exchanged numbers, he invited her to his home and sexually assaulted her despite her clear refusal. "Stop.
I don't want to do this. I'm only 16," she told him.
He raped her again over the following weeks. The girl became pregnant during this period and chose to keep the child, despite pressure from him to have an abortion.
ACT Chief Justice Lucy McCallum found he showed no remorse and described his conduct as opportunistic and predatory. He was sentenced to five years jail with a non-parole period of three years.
