Matt Burton in talks to reunite with Sexton at Perth Bears
Matt Burton is in talks with Perth Bears to move from Canterbury and play five-eighth as a free agent.
Matt Burton, the NSW Blues utility, is in early talks with The Bears about moving from Canterbury. The Bulldogs gave him permission to explore the market before he becomes a free agent on 1 November.
The Bears are ready to offer him the No.6 jersey with matching pay. If the deal goes through, Burton would reunite with Toby Sexton, his former halves partner.
Their pairing helped drive Canterbury toward finals in 2024-25. Several other clubs are likely to pursue Burton as either a centre or pivot.
Canterbury's general manager Phil Gould said the club wants to keep Burton. He understands Burton's management is testing the market to find his true value.
