Ukrainian couple drowns in rescue attempt at Costa Blanca
Two 25-year-old Ukrainians drowned while attempting a rescue at a Spanish beach.
A Ukrainian couple, both 25, drowned at Costa Blanca in southern Spain on Saturday. The pair had travelled to the Alicante region to visit friends.
The girlfriend and another woman got into difficulty in the waves. The boyfriend and another man entered the water to help, but both Ukrainian nationals drowned.
One of the two men managed to save his own partner. Costa Blanca averages about 47 drownings annually across its 200-kilometre coast.
The Alicante region experienced one of its worst swimming seasons in 2025, when eight people drowned in its waters in the first seven days of June alone.
