Bollards coming to Strzelecki Lookout after year of safety push by grieving
Traffic-rated bollards will be installed at Strzelecki Lookout by January 2027 after a petition and campaign by the Nankervises.
Ian Nankervis and his wife Nicole have pushed for safety measures at Strzelecki Lookout since their 31-year-old son Aden died by suicide there last November. A petition launched in the wake of Aden's death drew over 2,700 signatures.
The petition called for bollards, CCTV cameras, crisis phones and better signs. City of Newcastle backed a safety review in December.
The council has now confirmed bollards will be installed, with work expected to finish by January. Lifeline crisis support signage has already gone up at three entry points.
The family believes it needs to be larger and more visible. Ian said stronger measures could help other families avoid the same pain.
