Wanneroo Show approves poultry pavilion despite bird flu fears
Wanneroo Show approved poultry exhibits with strict biosecurity rules after the Royal Show cancelled due to H5 avian influenza.
The Royal Show cancelled its poultry pavilion for the first time, removing around 750 birds from 80 exhibitors due to H5 bird flu. Wanneroo Show is going ahead with its poultry show on 13 and 14 November after the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development approved it with strict safety rules.
Exhibitors must house birds for at least 14 days before the show. Exhibitors must keep birds from accessing wild water, do regular health checks, and keep different bird types in separate rows.
Exhibition cages must be cleaned thoroughly. Equipment cannot be shared between exhibitors.
After the show, birds must be quarantined for at least 30 days. Show president Dot Newton said the Royal Show was too cautious.
She expects strong entries from exhibitors keen to show their birds.
