Michael Robert King, 60, appeared in the Supreme Court in Launceston on October 16 and pleaded guilty to wounding. The attack happened on March 16 at his Beauty Point home when a visitor was sitting with him on the porch.
King reached for a small axe, leant across the table and struck the man on the head. When the victim tried to take the axe away, King hit him again.
The man suffered two large lacerations on his forehead, each requiring five stitches, and needed medical attention. Police later found the axe in King's toolbox.
King has a long history of assault convictions dating to the 1980s. His defence argued the attack was not planned and was clearly not thought through.
