German court lifts close police surveillance of McCann suspect

German court ruled Christian Brueckner is no longer deemed high-risk despite suspected involvement in her 2007 disappearance.

Brueckner was released from prison in September 2025 after serving seven years for rape. German police kept him under close watch because an expert said he was high-risk for reoffending.

This week, a regional court in Kiel rejected police appeals to keep that constant monitoring. The court cited a new expert assessment.

It found he no longer meets the high-risk threshold. Brueckner, 49, was named prime suspect in Madeleine McCann's 2007 disappearance in Portugal.

He denies involvement and claims he was selling drugs nearby when she vanished. An ankle monitor and other measures may still apply.
