Maria Corina Machado returns to Venezuela after more than a year
Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado returned to Venezuela after more than a year away, challenging Trump's chosen interim government.
Maria Corina Machado came back to Venezuela early Sunday after more than a year abroad. The Nobel Peace Prize winner had left secretly in late 2025 to get the award while hiding from Maduro.
Maria Corina Machado's return creates problems for US policy: President Trump backs interim leader Delcy Rodriguez and wants oil deals with her government. Trump said in September Venezuela is not ready for elections.
Machado believes only a real, democratic government can bring stability for investors. She had said she would do whatever it took to come home and help after earthquakes in June killed at least 6,500 people.
Former presidential candidate Edmundo Gonzalez confirmed her return and said he would join her soon.
