Greens pick 23-year-old activist Ethan Floyd for Cessnock
First Nations activist and law student Ethan Floyd will lead the Greens campaign in the coal-belt seat of Cessnock next year.
Floyd, 23, is originally from Cessnock and has campaigned on Indigenous rights and housing equity. Ethan Floyd gained international attention earlier this year for joining the Gaza flotilla to deliver humanitarian aid.
Cessnock is held by Labor with 48.7 per cent, but One Nation polled 15.3 per cent in 2023 and the Greens got 6.6 per cent. Floyd plans to campaign on affordable housing, healthcare, free public transport, and union jobs in a post-coal economy.
The seat faces an influx of new residents, with both local government areas expected to add another 50,000 people each by 2041.
