NSW pledges $6.8 billion for South Coast rail overhaul with mid-2030s completion
NSW Labor pledged $6.8 billion to upgrade the South Coast rail line, with work finishing by the mid-to-late 2030s.
NSW Transport Minister John Graham has outlined the $6.8 billion South Coast Rail Plan promised by Premier Chris Minns if Labor wins the March 2027 election. The centrepiece is electrification of the line between Kiama and Bomaderry, where commuters currently must change at Kiama for a diesel service.
The plan also includes duplication between Wollongong and Kiama and extra track between Hurstville and Sutherland to separate South Coast and T4 lines. Planning work starts next year with construction expected to finish by the mid-to-late 2030s.
Graham warned that construction will disrupt existing services, though specific details on closures remain unclear.
