Albanese defends Caribbean trip as Australia faces sharper economic slowdown

Albanese defended his Caribbean trip to a Commonwealth Heads meeting while interest rates rose at home.

Anthony Albanese travelled to Antigua and Barbuda for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. Albanese joined King Charles III and mining billionaire Andrew Forrest aboard Fortescue's Green Pioneer vessel.

Albanese said the trip served Australia's national interests. The trip included spreading trade and lobbying for an Australian seat on the UN Security Council.

He denied the Security Council bid was his main goal. He will not return to Australia until Friday evening.

The Reserve Bank raised rates in September, taking the cash rate to 4.60 per cent. For a household with a $731,000 mortgage, four increases could add about $5,568 to yearly payments.
