Rwanda signs Formula 1 deal to host first African Grand Prix since 1993
Rwanda will host F1's African Grand Prix from the early 2030s under a 10-year agreement.
Africa will return to the Formula 1 calendar for the first time since 1993, with Rwanda signing a 10-year deal to host the African Grand Prix. The first race could happen as early as 2030.
A new circuit is being built near Bugesera, about 40 kilometres south of the capital Kigali, alongside a new international airport. F1 chief Stefano Domenicali called it a landmark moment, saying the sport will now race on every inhabited continent.
The track will hold 100,000 spectators and serve as a concert and exhibition venue year-round. Rwanda is the third African country to host a Formula 1 race since the championship began in 1950.
