Tom Mitchell: Treacy's positioning cost Fremantle the grand final
Josh Treacy should have positioned behind the ball in the dying minutes. This would have saved Fremantle's grand final.
AFL champion Tom Mitchell looked at Fremantle's 17-point loss to Brisbane, and he found a critical mistake in the dying minutes. Treacy got the ball on the wing with under two minutes to play, but instead of positioning behind the ball, he kicked forward into a stoppage.
Mitchell said Treacy had learned to position behind the ball all year. Earlier in the season, against Collingwood and North Melbourne, Treacy had gone behind the ball to save the game with under two minutes left.
Mitchell said he could not understand why this did not happen on grand final day when it mattered most. The move would have given Fremantle an extra defender against Brisbane's dangerous forward Logan Morris.
Mitchell called this failure the biggest in Fremantle Football Club history.
