Third whale carcass in a month closes another Perth beach
A third whale carcass in a month has closed Sorrento Beach in Perth.
Sorrento Beach in Perth has been closed after a whale carcass washed ashore, as authorities warned of possible shark activity in the area. This is the third whale to wash up on Perth beaches in a month and the second in a week.
The City of Joondalup said beaches would remain closed because residue from the carcass may draw sharks to the area. The timing comes with summer approaching and beaches set to become crowded.
On September 27, a 13-metre humpback whale washed up on South City Beach. Sorrento Beach was closed about five weeks ago when Greg O'Neill was killed by a shark.

Why it mattersRepeated whale strandings suggest a change in ocean conditions or whale behaviour. The presence of shark-attracting carcasses close to summer creates a genuine safety risk.
AustraliaPerth beachgoers face repeated closures just as the swimming season begins. Three shark deaths in Western Australia this year have already alarmed the community.
