Derby Day fall rules Coffey out of Melbourne Cup
Jockey Harry Coffey suffered a suspected fractured collarbone in a heavy fall at the Empire Rose Stakes.
Jockey Harry Coffey fell heavily at the top of the straight during Saturday's Empire Rose Stakes on Derby Day aboard Pondalowie. Cameras showed Coffey wincing and grabbing his shoulder as he hit the ground.
Medical reports suggest he has a suspected fractured collarbone. Coffey walked to the jockeys' room without major help, and Pondalowie passed basic vet checks.
Both escaped serious injury. The fall means Coffey will miss his ride on Shockletz in the Melbourne Cup next Tuesday, one of the year's biggest races.
Superstar jockey James McDonald won back-to-back races that afternoon, completing his third win of the day in the Empire Rose Stakes aboard Lady Shenandoah.
