Lockey McCartney joins Moyhu coaching ranks, inspired by father
Wangaratta Rovers premiership player Lockey McCartney, 29, has signed as co-coach at Moyhu in the Ovens and King Football League.
Lockey McCartney is stepping into coaching after departing Wangaratta Rovers as a two-time premiership player. Brendan McCartney, Lockey's father, coached the Western Bulldogs for three years from 2012.
Brendan has coached at the highest level for more than 30 years. Lockey said watching his father adapt as the game changed inspired him to pursue the role.
Lockey missed the 2024 grand final after an AC joint injury in the preliminary final but returned to play in successive winning seasons. Before his return, he had played only five games across five years.
His comeback and premiership wins were a rare achievement. His new role at Moyhu begins in the Ovens and King Football League, a regional Victorian competition.
