Mortgage squeeze threatens Sydney homeowner's 26-year home
Homeowner with $800 monthly mortgage payments and $900 weekly income fears she must sell if rates rise.
Vanessa Merryweather has lived in her Sydney home for nearly 26 years, but a single interest rate rise could force her to sell. Merryweather's mortgage repayments are about $800 a month, matching nearly her entire weekly income of $900.
Merryweather once had a $60,000 buffer saved ahead, but Covid shut down her business and then a string of health crises drained it dry. Merryweather survived bowel cancer and her daughter survived lymphoma, but the medical and living costs wiped out her safety net.
Even a hardship arrangement with her bank is no longer enough. She is now selling furniture, clothes and anything else she can part with to survive.
The Reserve Bank says rate rises are necessary to fight inflation, but the pain is falling hardest on people already under pressure.
