Drink driver jailed six years after killing friend in Tura Beach crash
Edward James McCoid was sentenced to six years in prison for driving drunk and killing his 46-year-old passenger in a June 2025 rollover near Tura Beach.
McCoid was 33 when he chose to drive after drinking on 21 June 2025 in the Tweed Shire area. He lost control of his vehicle, which veered off the road and rolled.
Both McCoid and his passenger were critically injured; the passenger later died. Acting Judge Andrew Haesler noted McCoid had a long history of problematic alcohol use that appeared to be a coping mechanism for anxiety.
McCoid completed two rehabilitation programs while on bail but relapsed. The judge said McCoid must find a different way to manage his anxiety than drinking.
The sentence includes a non-parole period of three years and 10 months, making him eligible for parole in May 2030.
