Wegovy weight-loss pill approved by TGA for Australian patients

Australia's TGA approved daily Wegovy tablets; availability expected sometime in 2027.

Novo Nordisk, the maker of Wegovy, won TGA approval for an oral tablet version in 1.5mg, 4mg, 9mg and 25mg strengths. The tablet works the same way as the injection: it slows stomach emptying, cuts appetite and signals fullness to the brain.

The pill uses a special ingredient that protects the drug long enough for the body to absorb it. Users must take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with half a cup of water, then wait at least 30 minutes before eating.

It is not clear exactly when Wegovy tablets will be available in Australia, but experts expect sometime in 2027.

Why it mattersAustralians who struggle with the weekly injection schedule or find it impractical will soon have a daily pill option for weight management.

AustraliaAustralian patients can access a more convenient form of GLP-1 treatment from late 2026 or 2027, though the strict morning routine makes it less flexible than the weekly injection for people with shift work or busy mornings.
