PLS Group approves $1.9bn lithium expansion at Pilgangoora mine
PLS Group's board approved a $1.9bn expansion to double capacity at Pilgangoora mine to 2 million tonnes per year from late 2029.
PLS Group, Australia's leading lithium miner, approved a major expansion despite volatile spodumene prices. The Pilgangoora mine near Port Hedland will double capacity to 2 million tonnes per year, with first tonnes arriving in late 2029.
The expansion includes a $1.9bn plant upgrade and up to $650m on infrastructure including a new camp and haulage road. A further underground development could eventually push output to 2.2 million tonnes.
This would match the scale of the world's biggest lithium mine. Global lithium demand continues to grow strongly for batteries in electric vehicles and energy storage systems.
Managing director Dale Henderson said high-quality assets capable of supplying world demand are rare. PLS's cost position improves with the expansion, which sets it up to weather future market cycles.
