Canberra families to get decision on local pediatric cancer care by mid-2027
The ACT Government will complete a study by June 2027. It will look at local cancer treatment for children.
Canberra families currently travel three hours to Sydney for their children's cancer treatment. These tiring trips add stress to parents already overwhelmed.
A petition signed by 2,364 Canberrans asked the ACT Government to create a local pediatric oncology and haematology service. On Thursday, the Legislative Assembly agreed to look at whether a better regional service could work.
It could safely increase local treatment while keeping access to Sydney's expert care. An interim update is due by March 2027.
A final feasibility report is due by June. Canberra currently shares care with Sydney Children's Hospitals Network.
The government will talk with NSW and clinical partners before reporting on a preferred service model.
