Father drowns in Florida trying to free seagull from his fishing line

William Romberg drowned while trying to rescue a seagull caught on his fishing line.

William Romberg, known as Stone to his family, was fishing at an inlet near his home in Laguna Beach, Florida when his line accidentally caught a seagull. Rather than abandon the distressed bird, he jumped into the water to free it.

The fishing hook and bird became tangled around his hand as he worked to release them. Powerful currents pulled him further from shore as he fought to return.

Despite his efforts, the exhausted father could not reach safety and drowned on Sunday afternoon. Romberg leaves behind his wife Taylor and two daughters, Hadley, 3, and one-year-old Lainey.

He worked as a beach manager at Carillon Beach. His employer and community members have expressed their grief, with tributes describing his kindness and willingness to help.
