Mother convicted for schoolyard tirade at teenagers
A 38-year-old woman was convicted and placed on a nine-month community corrections order for yelling at two sisters in a school yard.
The woman screamed at the teenagers during recess at a Border school in August, urging them to fight her daughter one-on-one. The woman's daughter had phoned her during a heated argument with the sisters.
When the mother arrived at the school, she walked past the office into the yard and continued yelling despite being told four times by a deputy principal to leave. School staff called police.
The court heard she was convicted of harassing or intimidating a school student. She was also fined $220 for remaining on prescribed premises without lawful excuse.
For legal reasons, she cannot be named.
Why it mattersThe case shows courts take playground intimidation seriously and will back school staff when parents escalate conflicts involving young people.
AustraliaParents and school staff in NSW now see a precedent for prosecution when adult aggression is brought into school grounds during disputes involving children.
