Newcastle girls attacked by mob, offered community support
Two teenage girls were attacked by a mob in Newcastle on Sunday afternoon. The mob had as many as 30 teenagers.
The 14 and 15-year-olds were attacked on Pacific Street on Sunday afternoon. The older girl had her hair ripped out while protecting her friend.
The girls have been helped by psychologists, self-defence trainers and community members. The girls' school and local community supported them.
The girls' parents say the real problem is that attackers don't face serious consequences. Current laws don't punish young offenders enough.
Both families want new laws to better protect victims.
