Fire breaks out at Eagle's Nest, person detained for questioning
A fire broke out at the Kehlsteinhaus, Hitler's retreat in the Bavarian Alps. Authorities held a person as a possible suspect.
A fire alarm went off Friday night at the Eagle's Nest. The Eagle's Nest is perched on a cliff about 1800 metres above sea level in southeastern Germany.
Firefighters arriving at the scene saw flames and worked through Saturday morning to extinguish them. The high altitude and remote location made it difficult to get fire engines to the site.
Crews needed breathing protection to work inside. No one was in the building and authorities believed no one was injured.
Police held a person as a possible suspect. It is unclear if they had anything to do with the blaze, police said.
The Kehlsteinhaus, built in 1938, has worked as a café and restaurant since 1952. It attracts visitors who ride an elevator up the mountain.
