Rockliff stands firm on school Christmas row as backlash grows

Premier Jeremy Rockliff defended school Christmas plans without checking facts, then faced backlash when the truth emerged.

Tasmania's Liberal Premier jumped into a school controversy over Christmas celebrations without the full story. A concerned parent emailed him about a school changing the event's name to be more inclusive.

Rockliff replied to the education department, accusing schools of removing Christmas references. The next day, the story exploded.

It turned out schoolchildren themselves had proposed the name change to include classmates from different backgrounds. Senior Liberals have mocked the critical reaction.

Teachers' unions are pushing to ban politicians from school visits. Many voters who backed the Liberals are unhappy with the government's handling of the row.
