NSW scraps plan to cut $200m from Hunter councils
NSW Local Government Grants Commission abandoned plans to redirect $200 million in federal grants away from Hunter councils.
NSW's Local Government Grants Commission has backed down from stripping $200 million from Hunter councils' federal funding over the next decade. The proposal would have redirected grants toward rural councils less able to raise rates themselves.
Lake Macquarie would have lost $7.2 million a year. Newcastle would have lost about $10 million annually.
Newcastle lord mayor Gavin Morris told Premier Chris Minns the cuts were unfair. The premier listened and stopped the cuts.
The existing funding method will continue.
