Award-winning Waramanga home proves downsizing can work
A Waramanga home won an ACT Architecture Award for combining energy efficiency with downsizer-friendly design.
De Rome Architects designed this Waramanga home, which won a commendation at the ACT Architecture Awards for smart design. An insulated concrete slab, double glazing and thermal window frames cut energy use greatly, so solar panels aren't needed.
Outside, native plants and a 5000-litre rainwater tank reduce maintenance work. Two separate suites let residents host guests independently or use the space as needed.
The open central living area connects to a large kitchen with flexible furniture placement. Ready-made anchor points in bathrooms let future residents add disability rails without full renovations.
Remote fans, sensor lighting and instant-hot water add extra convenience. The design shows downsizers don't need to give up quality or smart technology.
