The Hume Football Netball League will decide in October whether to shrink its season. Twelve clubs will vote, and at least 8 must agree to cut from 18 rounds to 16.
A 7-5 vote in favour will not be enough. League president Phil Bouffler said the change must be decisive: "It's got to be decisive and be at least 8-4 because it is a big change."
Clubs pushed for the reduction to ease the workload on volunteers. Bouffler said: "It is primarily about easing the burden on volunteers, simple as that."
The pressure comes from volunteers who work all year across winter and summer events, plus the tight gap between cricket and football seasons. But the move risks damaging junior football, reducing club revenue from one less home game, and affecting recruiting because clubs will have less home game revenue even though they will have more money per game.
