Sculptures By The Sea at Bondi: 60 hearts confront violence excuses
Sixty concrete hearts display phrases that minimise or excuse violence, each representing a woman killed this year.
Sixty concrete hearts titled Sweethearts stand at Marks Park between Bondi and Tamarama beaches as part of Sculptures By The Sea. Each heart represents an Australian woman killed by violence this year.
The hearts are engraved with phrases like Asked for it, Boys will be boys, and She coulda left, words that ignore, minimise, excuse, or shift blame for abuse. Lysaght and McCurdie designed them to look like coloured lollies from a distance but reveal their purpose up close.
The installation aims to spark conversation about how casual language breeds tolerance for violence.
