Illawarra Edible Garden Trail opens October 31, November 8

Illawarra Edible Garden Trail opens October 31, November 1, and November 7, 8. Local gardens open 10am to 3pm.

A unique trail is running across the Illawarra this spring. The trail invites you into working backyard gardens from Helensburgh through Shellharbour to Gerroa.

The gardens range from veggie patches and balcony systems to native habitats, community crops, and beehives. All are at different stages of growth.

Visit them across two weekends in late October and early November. The event celebrates local food growing, backyard variety, and community connection.

Event coordinator Emily Fowler said the trail shows "what is possible, connecting neighbours and building a stronger local growing community." One featured garden is run by Millie Hall and Michael Zubrecky.

It started with four veggie beds six and a half years ago. Today it has grown into a self-supporting setup with more than 20 vegetable beds, chickens, guinea pigs, a greenhouse, and fruit trees.

Almost every meal on their table comes from what they've grown.
