Vince Lester, eccentric reformer of toilet doors, remembered by Premier
Former Queensland MP Vince Lester has been remembered by the Premier. He was known for toilet-door safety campaigns and walking backwards for charity.
Vince Lester served Queensland from 1974 to 2004 across three Central Queensland seats. He became famous for campaigning for a law change.
He wanted all toilet doors to open outward. This would allow emergency access if someone collapsed inside.
Vince Lester also famously walked backwards more than 20 kilometres to raise money for a local football club. Premier David Crisafulli paid tribute in parliament.
He described Lester as a grassroots campaigner who believed in practical solutions to everyday problems. Treasurer David Janetzki called him the "minister for dunny doors".
Katter Party MP Shane Knuth revealed something interesting. Even the Katter Party's founder thought highly of Lester.
He said "listen to Vince. He taught me everything I know".
